Chapter 3
It is very hard to believe that an organization whose values defy what is considered normal behavior, and break the laws could have established such a corporate-like structure. Normally when you think about drug dealers you think about uneducated individuals, however after reading this I realize that it takes some very unique business skills to be able to pull off such and elaborate operation. Once again incentives come into play. These foot soldiers earn next to nothing and could easily get a higher paying job, however they continue to work for next to nothing for the opportunity to advance. Some of these people will never advance and have to quit the game, which now the time they spent doing this activity could have been put to use on something that could be far more productive. Also the chance of death for these foot soldiers was 1 in 4! That is another astonishing figure that blows the mind. The only reason that you can conclude as to why people would continue putting themselves in these situations is that the ends must justify the means.

You said something golden here. You thought those drug dealers were uneducated individuals. I think that is the common belief that we all tend to associate with criminals. Let’s say for instances, a lot of people under estimated Osama Bin Laden as a little cave man who’s messing with a big giant. Well 6 years after September 11th, we still haven’t caught him. I think as a society we are not to underestimate people simply because they are involved in socially unacceptable behaviors. We can do a better job fighting crimes if we respect the intelligence of criminals.
Good point. It is a common judgment that many people have. You associate criminals with the uneducated, while in all actuality there are numerous criminals in jail that have degrees and just made a bad choice or two.
Mike Germain put forth a great comment on the intelligence of criminals. For the most part, criminals are uneducated or else they would have jobs to support themaselves. On the other hand, there are many criminals that have outsmarted the law. If we were to respect the intelligence of these criminals a bit more, I feel that our law enforcement would have a much better chance at catching them.
Based on the evidence, you have to assume that the majority of the time criminals, especially drug dealers are uneducated. If they were so educated, they would probably have a better understanding of just how dangerous and poor the occupation of slingin' crack is. But, with the educated criminals who "made a bad choice," how can you know they didn't get their education to make them better criminals?
